One more thing I tried grabbing en.(dic aff) and ru.(dic aff) from Firefox spellcheck plugins, putting them to /home/alexander/spelling and then adding that directory to Locale Paths. No matter what I tried to do with those locales, spelling no longer worked. Even keeping just the English one and renaming it to zz-ZZ.(dic aff) disabled spell checking completely. BTW both en and ru are spelled OK in OSX natively: The second and the third pair is ignored probably because the OS somehow detects that it's not a language whitelisted in System Preferences: I'm totally confused:–). I have a similar issue on macOS 10.12.6 with atom 1.20 with fr_FR, en_GB, grc_GR (dictionaries installed in ~/spelling and directory declared in Locale Paths) French and British english are recognised and corrected but greek (ancient) is altogether ignored.

Note however that the custom dic grc_GR is not automatically working in a multilingual setting in macOS native text editor (the spelling has to be set to Ancient Greek only in System Preferences > Keyboard >Video editing for mac desktop. Text, not to Automatic by Language). In this case, it seems that relying on the system spell check is not the best way to go.

Autocorrect seems to be enabled by default in OSX 10.11 El Capitan which can be a pain especially in Mail, Skype and TweetDeck or any application which you are typing a lot and simply don’t need it. Put a stop to It Globally Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Click on Keyboard > Text and turn Autocorrect off by unchecking Correct spelling automatically Turn off AutoCorrect per Application Or if you see the benefits of it for most Applications and just want to disable one or two – then you can do this in the Applications Edit Menu under Spelling and Grammer and disable ‘Check Spelling While Typing’ This also works for OSX 10.10 Yosemite and OSX 10.9 Mavericks.
