I have a WD My Passport external hard drive. It had been working fine then the past couple of days it shuts down my MAC OSX 10.9.5 every time I connect it to the computer via USB. I tried connecting it to my MAC desktop and it shuts that computer down as well. Each computer gives the grey screen with the error code that the computer has been shut down due to a problem. The computer will restart and get to a certain point and shut down again. This continually happens.

Is there a solution to this problem? I had the same problem with two OWC drives (one FW, one USB) - 100% reproduceable. After much time spent with Apple support and OWC, it was determined that Apple had made some changes in Mavericks/Yosemite which made some chipsets used in enclosures simply not talk to the Mac and cause it not to wake up. My problem was solved by OWC providing me with two new external hard drives with different chipsets. That was the only solution.

So, you may want to contact WD and ask them about the chipsets they use with their external drives and whether or not they're aware of the OS changes which will play havoc with some mfr's chipsets.
