It can get POP3, IMAP and Exchange 2007 based email. On my previous Macs, I would have to use the old Outlook 98, then later just Outlook Web Access to get to my company's Exchange server. But ever since Mail could connect to Exchange servers, that's all I use now. (The included Mail, iCal and Addressbook all connect to Exchange servers so for basic things, they are quite sufficient.

I use all three as a pseudo-Entourage.) The only thing that you 'need' Entourage for is things like accepting appointments sent from Outlook, particularly if your mail is Exchange based. Me personally, I just manually create and reply to appointment requests rather than deal with Entourage. Realize that this is a ground up rewrite of Outlook. From the reviews I've read, it's missing a few features (I don't remember which at the moment) so I wouldn't do to much of a comparison between the Windows and Mac versions of Outlook.

Yes, from all the reviews, Outlook 2011 is very good almost a necessary upgrade for anyone using Entourage. But impressions of the Windows version of Outlook may not necessarily apply.
